Prospective Look at Edmonton

Okay, I know I did an Oilers update not very long ago, but I've been enjoying all the numbers and such I've been doing for all the non-playoff teams at the moment and this gives an idea of what the off-season looks like for every team, so... here we go again.

As of right now, the Oilers have 17 of 23 active roster spots theoretically filled by active contracts and regular players through the season. They are the first team of all the prospective looks to have two goalies signed, looking more like a platoon situation, for next season. Both keepers had a pretty decent year in Edmonton, despite their injury troubles.

As outlined previously, they have a few key players to re-sign for next season; Joni Pitkanen, Jarret Stoll, Marty Reasoner and Fernando Pisani look to be important names to be thrown back into the mix and you could make an argument for Curtis Glencross as well. The Oilers active 16 below are worth a reported $44.3 million already, so there isn't going to be a ton of space for the five that are named, especially when they need seven to go ahed with the season. Pitkanen alone made $2.4 million in his injury-plagued season, which he could look to raise the number. Stoll also wasn't very cheap last season at $2.2 million, so change is quite possibly on the horizon.

Kevin Lowe will likely be pretty busy moving some assets at Draft Day, he'll have players that may need new homes to allow for some key free agents to be signed or he may offer first dibs for these free agents for a low-level draft pick to increase the stable numbers. A player like Jarret Stoll could generate a fourth or fifth-round draft pick for moving around the restricted free agent offer sheet rules.

As for drafting, the Ducks have their first round pick, thanks to the Dustin Penner deal, so they could only make a deal for a pick to get one and the price for one of those is looking awfully high and it would be a pretty big stretch for Lowe to mortgage the team's immediate future in this draft. Thankfully, Penner scored 23 goals last season and has a bit more potential for next season, so the deal doesn't look too awful at the moment.
