Ellis is Number One Guy in Nashville

Much like the summer previous, the Nashville Predators have made a new decision going forward in net. Dan Ellis agreed to a 2-year, $3.5 million contract on Friday morning, announced at the same time as the deal that sent Chris Mason to the Blues.

Ellis had 23 wins for the Predators in 2008, registering a final total of 58 pool points in 44 appearances. The Predators decision to move Mason for Ellis is very reminiscent of the deal that sent Tomas Vokoun to Florida last summer, so Mason could be the number one guy in Nashville.

The $1.75 million cap hit for the next two seasons should be very comfortable for the Preds, as they now have 17 players signed on for next season at a reasonable cost of $37.5 million against the cap.

The next question in Nashville will be, who will back-up Ellis in 2009? Prospects Pekka Rinne and Jeremy Smith will vie for the job at camp or we could all be surprised to see the Preds make another move for someone with more experience. Stay tuned.
