Tampa Signs Picard

The Tampa Bay Lightning were keen to sign Alexandre Picard to a deal and on Monday, they announced that they had done just that. Picard was signed to a multi-year, one-way deal, which should keep him with the club all season in 2009.

Picard was acquired by the Lightning at the trade deadline in the Vaclav Prospal deal to Philadelphia and had a regular spot on the Lightning blueline since then. He finished the season with 24 games under his belt and 6 points between the Flyers and Lightning.

Picard should fit in as the third or fourth defenseman with a full season and could very well be an interesting consideration for your keeper leagues, as he could play a factor in Lightning scoring, if all goes well.

The addition of Picard now gives the Lightning seven defensemen for the coming season, but since the actual term and value of the deal haven't been disclosed as of yet, the actual season numbers haven't been updated. They do sit now with 17 regular players under contract for next season, but some trimming will have to be done for budget purposes.

The team also signed prospect defenseman, Kevin Quick, to a multi-year entry-level deal on Monday as well.
