Komisarek Signs in Toronto

The Maple Leafs made a huge splash in the Northeast Division by signing Mike Komisarek, the former Canadiens blueliner, to a 5-year deal worth $22.5 million, an average salary of $4.5 million. The Leafs have done well to make their blueline much bigger, including their trade just prior to this signing.

In 2009, Komisarek had a bit of trouble staying healthy, playing only 66 games in Montreal. In those 66 games, Komisarek had 2 goals and 9 assists, which is awfully low for $4.5 million per season, but he does bring his huge size and good defensive strength for his value.

With all the moves made today, the Leafs are now sitting with 18 players on their playable roster at a salary cap hit of roughly $40.7 million. With the moves on the blueline, they now have eight blueliners, which could mean another one is on the way out. Stay tuned.
