Caps Extend Two More

The Washington Capitals announced a couple of contract extensions on Wednesday. Both David Steckel and Tyler Sloan signed deals today, which will see both players stay with the club for the next three and two years, respectively. This solidifies the depth of the Capitals just a little bit more for the 2010/'11 season and a little bit further.

This season, both players are playing a little more often, which was obviously key to the team's decision to extend them. Steckel has played in 42 games for the Caps already this year, scoring 2 goals and 3 assists for the team, but acting more as a faceoff specialist centre, more than a scoring forward. Sloan, a depth defenseman, has played in 22 games this year, scoring 2 goals and 2 assists.

Neither player really acts as a good fantasy player, scoring wise.

Salary CapIt has been reported that Steckel's deal is worth $1.1 million each year, but there has been no mention of Sloan's cap hit just yet, but I don't think he's played enough games to really qualify as a regular for next season. So, with Steckel's cap hit, the Capitals now have 11 players signed on at a cap rate of $36.1 million, which has a lot of flexibility going forward into next season. The Capitals will need all sorts of flexibility with Nicklas Backstrom, Semyon Varlamov and Tomas Fleischmann heading to restricted free agency.
