Flyers Training Camp Roster

Continuing along my training camp tour of 2010, I found the roster for the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday, which had more than their fair share of unsigned players and camp invites, so I think this list might be trimmed down with some sort of urgency. It could just be me though.

In theory, the Flyers have a full roster sitting in their Summer roster spots, which I have been keeping up-to-date with all the signings and trades throughout the off-season.  There are very few holes left to fill for management and the coaching staff and yet they still thought to invite Bill Guerin to camp and will put some other youngsters through their paces to see what kind of moxie they have.

That all being said, I could see both goalies in the Summer roster end up being bubble players, especially with talent like Backlund and Bobrovsky waiting in the wings.  I would imagine that if either kid was to dazzle in this training camp, they may not feel too much loyalty to the tandem that got them to the Cup Finals, because I don't think that the goaltending really got them to the Finals in the first place.

I think you can make a reasonable argument for a couple skaters on either the forward lines or the blueline, but I think the Flyers would only be replacing them with players of similar nature, like energy guys or low-minute men.

Salary CapWith the current Summer roster that they are holding onto and no buyouts or penalties on the books, the Flyers could safely going into this season at an annual cap rate of $59.2 million, which is a shade under the cap ceiling.  I would also imagine that there would be some moves to the minors for those who don't have to pass through waivers, just to save a few extra pennies here and there, but the Flyers do look to be okay, as of Wednesday.

I think this season might be a better one (regular season, anyways) for scoring and possibly picking up some more wins. The core group is essentially the same and the coaching staff should be able to manipulate the defense the same way, but there are some lingering questions about the starting goalie going into the start of the season, but we should know who will get the nod when I start the draft on the 28th.
