Senators Training Camp Roster Released

We're only a couple days before teams open camp and Wednesday morning brings us the Ottawa Senators' training camp roster, freshly skimmed of the rookies who won't be going to camp and those who will, plus the expected veterans who will be making a run for spots this year.

Going from the back outwards, I like the goalie pairing from my Summer roster to make it through camp, but not without challenge from Brodeur or Lehner.  I think we'll have seniority rule there.  On the blueline, I get the feeling that Campoli and Carkner may be on the bubble, their jobs to lose, but still worthy of being dropped for Cowen, Weircioch, Lee or Hale.  Up front, there are still a couple of spots open before concerns about bubble players arise.  For the most part, I think we'll see those spots get taken up by a race in camp and if there are more than two players that excel, then we'll start knocking off bubble players from the Summer roster.

Salary CapThe Senators are going to try and run a tight ship under the salary cap, which isn't to say that they aren't going to spend most of their space.  With the Summer roster in place and three buyouts, the Sens currently have $55.9 million on their books for the 2011 season, which only leaves $3.5 million to fill a couple of gaps and then try to keep some sort of flexibility through the season, especially for if they contend for a playoff spot.

I used to be pretty big on the Senators in the hockey pool drafts of yesteryear, but they have spooked me with some low scoring seasons and some inconsistent play, which still leaves me rather weary.  This isn't to say that I won't be looking at some players in Ottawa seriously, I just might not be giving them the highest projections to start the year, possibly hoping for more of a bargain pick.  If there was one position I would like to seriously consider out of Ottawa, it would be the defense.  They might produce some good numbers this year from the backend.
