Leighton Update

News has gone from bad to worse for the Flyers' Michael Leighton, regarding his back injury. The team and player has now opted to undergo surgery to repair a bulging disc in his back and this will now cost the goaltender upwards of eight weeks on the shelf.

For the Flyers, this would be bad news if they were only left with Brian Boucher to hold down the fort, but after Thursday night's opener and the performance by rookie Sergei Bobrovsky, the Flyers may not feel so bad about.  I would imagine it was the rookie's performance that made everyone feel comfortable with the surgery decision.

ImplicationsThe original prognosis for Leighton was enough for my draftees to avoid him at the draft, just over a week ago, so there won't be anyone missing him too badly there. This whole Bobrovsky matter may make Larry wonder a little bit, as he sided with Brian Boucher for his pool team, so it'll be stop and go for him.

I haven't tallied up all the selection sheet entries yet, but I can't imagine that there will be many selections for him there either.  Now that he's out until the beginning of December, it may be wise to just hold on and see if he gets a chance to return at all.
