Sheet Player News (Oct 10)

The Sabres opened their season with plenty of depth on the blueline, which means someone has to be in the press box to start the season. The Sabres decided to sit Box 30 defenseman Chris Butler on Saturday night, which doesn't help his fantasy value at all. In the last defenseman box in the Eastern Conference, Butler might be perceived as a pretty good steal, but if he's going to start in the press box, you might want to think twice.

The New Jersey Devils went out and signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Anton Volchenkov for his shot-blocking abilities, but with that skill set comes an incredible amount of risk. That couldn't have been more true on Saturday night, where he took a Nicklas Backstrom slap shot to the face, breaking his nose.  The Devils are optimistic that Volchenkov won't miss much time, if any, but I would have to think there would have to be some hesitance to put him back in the line-up right away, face shield or not.

A couple of scratches in the Rangers line-up, as they took on the Sabres on Saturday night. Box 23 forward Tim Kennedy and Box 30 defenseman Matt Gilroy were in the press box to start the season, which hurts their fantasy value in the short-term, but may have some better long-term effects, if they can somehow work harder and get themselves into the line-up.
