Leafs Lose Giguere Again

Things are still not going smoothly for J-S Giguere and his oft-injured groin, as he re-aggravated his injury against the Flames on Thursday night and was not able to continue to play through two periods, giving way to Jonas Gustavsson.  The word on Giguere's injury is that he'll be in need of some rest and will try to get back to 100% before he hits the crease again.  The word being used at the moment is 'indefinitely,' but some of the quotes I've read suggest that it might not be too long.

Giguere has only figured into 18 games for the Leafs this season, picking up a record of 8-7-2 with no shutouts or assists.  That makes for some easy math for the hockey pool, as he has only collected 16 points this season.

Going into Saturday's action, Giguere was ranked 200th in pool scoring, which is only good enough to be 34th among all goalies this season.  It has not been a great season for his statistics, but in actual fact, he is currently ranked better than how he finished in 2010, which was a pretty hard season for the veteran goalie.

ImplicationsUnfortunately, this hasn't been the first time Giguere has fallen to this injury and this isn't the first post about it either.  Jani, if he has been reading, has seen one half of his goaltending tandem appear on the blog a few times, which has to be distressing.

The first post about leaving with a groin injury came a month ago, but it wasn't considered to be too serious and he played not long after the fact.  Since there wasn't a great deal going on, Jani didn't have his stats posted.  The injury occurred in the middle of Week Seven, but at the start of the week, Jani had already dropped down to 17th spot in the standings, so the injury was not going to hurt him too much more.

The second post was only 11 days ago, where Jani was up to 15th spot in the standings after a small comeback from Giguere.

The injury now sees Jani down in 16th spot, but still has a 7-point gap on 17th place, so he could be in okay shape, especially if the injury isn't too serious.  He's only 2 points out of 14th, 6 points out of 13th and 13 points out of 10th.  He'll need some serious help to pick up those numbers and a short stay on the injured list for Giguere.
