Rolston Assigned to Albany

Likely with little time left to spare, the Devils have made use of Brian Rolston clearing waivers before the holiday break by sending him down to Albany of the AHL on Tuesday.  Rolston has long been considered to be the odd-man out after the Ilya Kovalchuk contract signing and all the cap troubles thereafter and now with bodies slowly becoming healthy again and the Devils struggles becoming greater and greater, movements have to happen.  Everyone and their dog is expecting Rolston to be placed on re-entry waivers on Wednesday, in order for another team to take him of their hands for half price, cutting the Devils' responsibility in half as well.

It has not been a good year for Rolston offensively or health-wise, who turns 38 in February, scoring only 2 goals and 3 assists in 25 games for the Devils this season.  A team that would be out to pick him up would likely want him for his veteran presence and would likely have a use for him as a 2nd-line forward, just to up his minutes.

ImplicationsRolston wasn't picked up in the draft at all this year, mostly because of some injury troubles in the pre-season, which limited his minutes early on, while his offense upon his return was pretty awful, not making him an attractive pick in the waiver draft.  If he can move in the next 48 hours, I'm sure some eyes will focus on him for a little while, see how he manages in new surroundings.
