The deal has been a terribly kept secret for a little while now, but on Monday morning, it was made official that the St. Louis Blues had officially signed free agent forward Kyle Wellwood to a two-way deal that will last until the end of the season.Wellwood had signed in the KHL after NHL training camps finished, but mutually agreed to terminate that deal with his Russian club for personal reasons, leaving himself as an unrestricted free agent, looking for a new place to play in North America.
The deal is reportedly worth $600,000 annually when he's with the Blues, which will be pro-rated for the remainder of the season, which would work out to be about $268,000 against the cap, saying that he would stay up for every day after he clears waivers on Tuesday.
The signing of Wellwood comes way too late for the selection sheet pool to even bat an eye, but depending on his compete level with the Blues, he may have some value in the second waiver draft this year. Then again, in 2010 with the Canucks, Wellwood finished with only 25 points in 75 games, working out to a poor 0.33 points-per-game scoring rate, which doesn't even rank in the top 20 available through 15 weeks.
