Varlamov Out With Knee Injury

The Capitals have been without one of their goalies, Semyon Varlamov, since the weekend, he's dealing with a knee injury at the moment.  Varlamov has been attending Capitals practice in the early parts of this week, but he has not been cleared for game action.  Consider him day-to-day with the knee injury, with a possible return date of Saturday.

It's been a really tough year for Varlamov, as he has only appeared in 24 games this season for the Capitals, missing out on more than 20 games due to various injuries and situations.  In those games, he has picked up a record of 10-8-4 with 2 shutouts, giving the Russian keeper 24 points on the season.  That's only good enough for 290th in pool scoring this season, good for 38th among all goalies in the NHL, back-up numbers at the very best.

ImplicationsUnfortunately for Stacey C. in the draft, it hasn't been quite the season from Varlamov that he was hoping for, taking him in the 2nd round, 24th overall, this season.  Obviously, with the successes in the regular season for the Capitals in previous years, it could have easily been Varlamov's time to exceed some previous career-highs.  That has been far from the case and Stacey's team is 35 points out of the money, arguably points that Varlamov could have had if things went according to plan.
