Devils Re-Sign Hedberg

The New Jersey Devils did a little bit of housekeeping on Friday evening, signing back-up goaltender Johan Hedberg to a new deal. The 38-year old keeper signed a 1-year deal, worth $1.25 million, which also includes a no-trade clause, just for security sake.

Hedberg was a very useful member of the Devils in 2011, as his colleague in the nets, Martin Brodeur, struggled mightily during the year, forcing Hedberg into a few more starts than he would have expected, thus pumping up his numbers for the year.  Hedberg finished with 15 wins, 3 shutouts and an assist for 37 points in the pool, ranking him 30th among all goalies, good enough to be considered a poor man's starter.

Salary CapThis now brings the Devils' projected salary cap number up a little bit more, $51.8 million for nine forwards, five defense, two goalies and two buyouts, leaving $12.5 million behind for three or four forwards and two defensemen.  Those numbers don't leave much behind for the likes of Zach Parise, who will likely be looking to sign long-term for substantial dollars.
