Modano Set For Post-Hockey Life

On Wednesday, via Facebook and Twitter, Mike Modano said that he will be holding a press conference to officially announce his retirement from the NHL after 21 seasons.

Modano was the 1st overall selection in the 1988 Entry Draft by the Minnesota North Stars and he started his career with the club in the 1990 season.  Modano was with the club through the move to Dallas, all the way through the 2010 season and then finished his career in the 2011 season with the Detroit Red Wings.

In 21 NHL seasons, Modano does have one Stanley Cup to his name, which he won with the Dallas Stars in 1999 and he has a number of All-Star honours to his name and an Olympic Gold Medal as well.

In 1,499 NHL regular season games, Modano finished with 561 goals and 813 assists for 1,374 points and he was a consistent member of the hockey pools that I have put on over the years.  There was a decline in his overall production after the 2006 season, which had really put a damper on his fantasy value, but his experience and veteran leadership was also an asset to the teams he had played with.

Modano is currently the highest scoring American-born player in NHL history, which should help his cause in being a first-ballot Hall of Famer, which would be the perfect cap to a very good career.
