The Minnesota Wild are currently in a bit of limbo, in regards to the Western Conference playoff race, especially with the NHL trade deadline only a week away. On Sunday night, they answered one of their questions going forward, what are they going to do with potential unrestricted free agent forward Kyle Brodziak... they re-signed him to a new 3-year contract extension.
Even if the Wild become sellers in the next seven days, they will not be parting with Brodziak, after giving the 27-year old power forward an $8.5 million deal extension, which will last through the 2015 season. This extension will give him a cap hit of $2.83 million per season, which puts him into the same cap hit bracket as Devin Setoguchi, Jussi Jokinen, Blake Wheeler, Valtteri Filppula and Sean Bergenheim, some heady company.
Brodziak currently ranks 183rd in pool scoring with 29 points in 59 games, 132nd among forwards, which would be good enough to be drafted in this season's hockey pool, but he wasn't in the end.
The signing of Brodziak for the 2013 season, now brings the Wild's total up to 15 players signed on for an annual projection of $46.5 million. The Wild have eight forwards, five defensemen and two goalies already signed on and they seem to be quite happy with their core group of players, so it will likely be more about additions than subtractions in the off-season.
