Flyers Extend Read

On Friday, the Philadelphia Flyers announced that they had locked up forward Matt Read for another four years, after the 2014 season, signing him to an extension, worth $14.5 million, a $3.625 million cap hit.

Read, 27, was set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season, so it was in their best interest to get a deal done now, before the end of the year, because, like some, I think he's poised to have a good season.

In his first two seasons in the NHL, Read has finished in the top 200 in pool scoring, 141st overall in his rookie season with 47 points, 175th overall last season with 24 points in 42 games and I think he can get over that hump and do some damage this year.  If he can do that, there is a good chance that the Flyers made the right move to lock him up now.

He is not an overly flashy player, but he sure finds a way to be in the right place at the right time, which has earned him some points on a pretty good team.
