Here comes the crazy season in the NHL!
With the draft only a few days away, the jockeying has now begun with a deal between the Blue Jackets and the Flyers acting as the starting pistol.
On Monday, the Blue Jackets sent forward R.J. Umberger and a 4th round pick in 2015 to the Flyers for Scott Hartnell.
It was quite well known that Umberger had requested a trade out of Columbus after their playoff exit. He finished the season 236th overall in pool scoring, finishing with only 18 goals and 16 assists in 74 games. The 32-year old forward has three years left on his current deal, each carrying a cap hit of $4.6 million.
Hartnell, on the other hand, had a decent year in Philadelphia, scoring 20 goals and 52 points in 78 games for the club, ranking 98th overall in pool scoring, 71st among forwards. Hartnell, 32, has five years left on his deal, each worth $4.75 million.
The Jackets get an immediate upgrade with a playoff-tested forward in Hartnell, while the Flyers do end up saving a wee bit of cap space and a couple years less on the existing deal they acquired. I would say that as a hockey move, the Jackets likely did better on paper.
Since it was somewhat of a wash, the Jackets have eight roster spots left with $22.6 million and the Flyers have six spots left with only $7.4 million left in cap space. Both cap numbers are dependent on the projected cap number of $71.1 million, which is likely to change.
