Bruins Are Bigger and Badder With Backes

The Boston Bruins are going to be a little bit bigger and harder to play against after the signing of former St. Louis captain David Backes on Friday.

The big power forward signed a 5-year, $30 million deal at the beginning of the free agency proceedings, adding to the list of long-term big dollar deals getting done in the frenzy.

The 32-year old finished last season with 21 goals and 45 points in 79 games for the Blues, which felt like a disappointing year from a scoring perspective.

The Bruins and their grinding style of play should be a decent fit for Backes, who can certainly play that way after a long stretch playing under Ken Hitchcock in St. Louis.  Surprisingly, Boston scored more goals last season than St. Louis, so there could be some added chance to pick up some extra points here and there.
