Hurricanes Extend Teravainen

The Carolina Hurricanes didn't have a great deal of work to do with pool worthy free agents, only having two players to work on in the off-season.  Well, even before we hit the expansion draft and/or the entry draft, they have taken care of one of the key free agents, as they have agreed to terms with forward Teuvo Teravainen.

The 22-year old Finn signed a 2-year deal, reportedly turning in a cap hit of $2.68 million for each year, which could work out to be quite the bargain deal for the Hurricanes.

In the 2017 season, Teravainen finished 132nd among all forwards in scoring, picking up 15 goals and 42 points in 81 games for the club, putting him firmly in the hockey pool conversation.  A young team like Carolina will be able to offer him more and more minutes with the production levels trending in the right direction, which should only improve his overall numbers.

As for the Hurricanes, they still have a lot of work to do in this off-season, as their projected roster today, still sits $3 million under the salary cap floor and that's with an exceptionally rough looking 23-man roster today.  If there was ever a team that could take on a bad contract for a pretty decent asset, it would be Carolina.

The cap hit has even more potential to shrink over the weekend, with the expansion draft and the likelihood that either one of Cam Ward or Eddie Lack could go, dropping at least another couple million off the total is a possibility.
