Morning Camp Demotions (Sep 25)

Projecting young players on NHL teams is pretty difficult, especially when you don't sit in front of these teams day in and day out, scouting their every move. It was thought that Hudson Fasching had a pretty good shot at making the Sabres out of training camp, but on Sunday, he was among a small number of cuts to the AHL, thus limiting his projected totals to the realm of the mid-season call-ups.  I didn't quite have Fasching as a pool worthy forward, but I thought he was going to make the team.

With Alex Nylander still hurt in training camp, this does open the door for players like Nicolas Deslauriers and Nicolas Baptiste, who are still in camp, but neither are really projected to be picked in the draft this weekend.

Another young player thought to be close to making the jump to the NHL is Carolina's Julien Gauthier, the 21st overall pick in the 2016 entry draft, but he was also among some demotions on Sunday, leaving the Hurricanes with 32 players left in camp.  The youngster might also be another one of those mid-season call-ups, depending on how well his first season in the AHL starts off, but I wouldn't be going after him for rookie points at the draft.

2017 1st round draft pick Martin Necas is still in Hurricanes camp and his name has popped up once or twice in training camp and preseason tweets from the team and beat writers, suggesting he still has a long look left this week.
